Coloring by the cat
Well it was always difficult for me to find an appropriate color combination for a website. I used a lot of colors before I pick this scheme. The solution came from my cat, Roxanne ![]()
I ended up with the solution provided by the wise Malarkey who describes how Web imitates art. The article is perfect so it is recommended for any designer. Trying to apply the technique I turned to the pictures of Roxanne, because I always liked the colors of the particular image.
In this photo the colors look OK, except for the red chair which was finally ignored. What I find appealing in this photo is the way that the browns complete the white and the black all over the cat. The blue trash meant to be an unanticipated gift, since I could never thought I would use this color.
The next step of the technique according to Malarkey way to pixelise the image. By pixalising an image it becomes extremely easy to select the exact colors you need in each case. Of course in order to get the colors you use the colorpicker tool in several image editing packages. Here is the same image after applying the method.
After picking the colors I saw that despite the fact they look perfect on the cat, they cannot be used for coloring the website, because they were too dull! So turned to changing the contrast of the image. This is the altered image with far more contrast applied on it.
Now the whole thing became easy. The colors of the cat are vivid and certainly useful for such a scope. So I picked a dark brown color for the main navigation boxes on the right of the screen. Most of the light browns turned to reds. I used one of them for most of the headings, the submit buttons and all the forms. Quite easily I decided to use one of the blues for the links. The background is not a pure white, but slightly darker. I am still wondering if the use of white is a more applicable choise. For the time I think I will keep this background, because it doesn’t blind you when there is not light in the room.
All in all I am still quite uncertain about the colors, but since I could not find an easier way to select the right color combination for the page Roxanne offered me a viable solution. Above all I am very happy that this very first post has to do with my cat too.
